Your Questions About Exercise Bike Reviews

James asks…

are expensive in home exercise bikes worth it?

I want a buy an exercise bike, looked at walmart.com and sportsauthority. but want a good quality bike with a comfortable seat. There are the upright ones which range from 100-300 (for most) and then the spinning quality bikes – around $400+. I just don’t know if it is worth it spending that kind of money? I dont’ want it to break right away. and reading reviews online doesn’t seem to help as there are a good deal of people that like the bikes and a certain few that never do, any suggestions?

admin answers:

They are only worth the money if you use them. Most end up being dustcatchers regardless of price.

That being said, the cheap department store models, say, up to $400 tend to be of low quality which often discourages the user. The better models, $400 and up, located at sporting goods stores and exercise retailers are certainly worth the extra money. Once you get to about $900-1000 there are diminishing benefits and you end up getting “bells and whistles” that aren’t really necessary for most people.

All this being said, and with the knowledge that I am a dyed-in-the-wool bikie, I suggest that unless you are transferring your exercise bike benefits to a real bicycle that you instead look at elliptical trainers. They provide a much better overall workout.

Robert asks…

Weight limit on exercise bikes?

I’m researching exercise bikes but I’m very uneasy about it. I weigh about 350 lbs and all of the products I am reading reviews for do not list weight limits.

So my question is- in general, should I be concerned if a product does not list a weight limit? I certainly do not want to break it due to my weight
I am looking at this bike since it’s the cheapest, but realize i may want to go higher-end if weight limits exist.

Always ask – if you email the manufacturers they’ll tell you (or, if they don’t answer, you don’t want to deal with them!). You may find that you need to buy a ‘commercial grade’ machine, rather than one of the lightweight versions often sold for home use. It may be possible to rent a machine too.

Oh, and have a look at the ‘recumbent’ style of exercycle as well – much more comfortable and stable if you’re relatively heavy. And, good luck: you’re doing the right thing.

Mark asks…

Folding Bike – Giant Halfway…worth it?

Has anyone had experience with one of these bikes?

http://nycewheels.com/giant-halfway-folding-bike.html

I read a few reviews on google and I was debating on buying it.
I’m a college student and I kind of wanted a bike to ride to school just to get a bit of daily exercise… but the thing is… bikes get stolen a lot at the university…even when they’re chained to bike racks… and if the bike‘s not stolen.. people tend to steal bike parts.. >_>

So I thought it would be nice to have a bike that could compact into a size that I could carry into class or something… but what worries me is exactly how “compact” these things get and whether it’s awkward to carry around. Also, how long does it take to fold down one of these bikes?

I went to the local bike store in my area and they have a “Giant Halfway” folding bike for about $400 when normally it would be $500. That was the only brand of folding bikes they had. Any personal advice/reviews on the bikes? Thanks!

Well I own a halfway.. Its a cool little town bike. I wouldn’t do any long rides on it. But they are well made.

But there’s always a but. If I had a choice. I would buy a Dahon. They should be able to order these at your local shop… But then again my giant has been in use for a few years… Still works great
