Your Questions About Exercise Bikes For Sale

Helen asks…

Should I get a stationary recumbent bike?

I need to get 45 mins of cardio in each day for my health. I’m thinking of getting a stationary recumbent bike for inside. My only concern is I know a lot of times when people buy exercise equipment it never gets used and just sits there then gets thrown in the dump or at a garage sale. Should I get one?
If you have any other exercise ideas, please feel free to let me know. Keep in mind that I live in Texas and it is sweltering hot here (with the humidity it feels like 102 right now), and if I’m in the heat like that I tend to get heat stroke, so that’s why I was thinking something indoors. I can’t join a gym because of finances. I’ve got to do something cardio though because I have over 100 lbs to lose.

Well just ask yourself if your going to be one of those people. If you can be determined to do it than i think it is a wonderful idea. If you cant get 45 minute in on it a day try to do some other activities like walking. It is also great for your health. Good luck

Thomas asks…

question about my road bike – 10 speed vs fixed gear ?

I have a 1981 centurion 10 speed. I use it manley for exercise. What would be the positives and negatives if I converted it into a fixed gear? Would it give me a better workout? I ride both hills and flats.

here is a picture… I found it at a garage sale for $15 bucks and fixed it up a little bit.

I remember you posting about this bike before. Great bike for $15.

As far as fixie being better exercise, the answer is no, it is not. A muti-speed bike gives you the option of a very flexible riding workout where as a fixie limits your workout dramatically.

Point of fact. Pro road riders use their muti-geared bikes to workout 99% of the time. If a fixie was superior than they’d use ‘em.

Just a note, if you do strip this bike down for a fixie, keep all your parts to put it back as it was. While the bike isn’t a collectors item, it is a very nice vintage bike.

Donna asks…

My parents say I want everything, do I?

Ok well I am 16 and my parents don’t exactly have a lot of money but my parents said I want everything, do I?? This is what I have asked for:
Getting my eyes checked and possible glasses and contacts (We have insurance that will pay for most of that)
Getting braces (again we have insurance but it still cost a lot)
A new computer (the one we have is crap, everyone in my house gets very frustrated with it and I can’t even do school work on it or anything)
A bike (Mine broke like a 2 years ago and I think it is great exercise)
Drivers training (That cost like $300 but I think that is important and in the state I live in your parents can’t teach you until you are 18 and I am going to be going to college when I am 17)
An xbox 360 (this was more just talk, or for me to buy when I get a job)
and of course clothes. (I buy all of my clothes on sale/clearance and I didn’t get any back to school clothes back in September either)

So far I have not gotten any of that. I am trying to be patient and I understand that we don’t have a ton of money but I mean it is not like I am asking for stuff like tons of purses or w.e. I have been asking for some of this suff for years (like the bike for like 2 years since it broke, the computer for like 2 years, the braces since I was like 14…) I can’t get a job until this summer and until then I have no money to buy anything for myself. Do you think I am asking for too much?? Thanks!!
No I really can’t get a job, my parents wont let me. I want to get a job…

Well the glasses and the braces are a must and are probably very daunting to your parents. I will tell you a little inside secret. Insurance never pays for everything. Most of the “good” vision insurance policies will only pay 50% of the cost which can be around 400 – 500 hundred dollars, Those adds on TV are never the “true” price.

Braces you are looking at about 5,000. After dental insurance you are still looking at about 3,000 dollars. In this economy most families are struggling to pay the every day bills. Sit down with your parents and ask them if you could work with them on a plan to get what you need, not what you want.

With the things you want consider renting out your services. For example, clean out a neighbors garage or other odds and ends until you can legally get a job. Once you can get a job you can get a bike and an xbox 360 on your own. You can even offer to go in half with your parents on a new computer.

I know it sucks. I grew up in a family with out a lot of money and I also had to go with out most of the time. I also do not have a lot now and I will tell you it is killing your parents not to be able to give you everything you want. It breaks my heart that I can not buy my daughter a new toy when she wants one. As a parent you have to choose Gas and electric or a bike. It is not a fun choice but a necessary one. Good luck!
